Help Center
Welcome to the “ulti-mutt” resource hub for our pet grooming professionals! Whether you’re a seasoned groomer or just starting out in the industry, this webpage is designed to provide you with a wealth of information, assistance and valuable tools to help employees navigate.
Check-in Process:
By performing the 7-point check in, the groomer can better assess the condition of the client’s coat, mobility and temperament. This also allows the groomer to decide if any other services should be recommended to the Pet Parent to better benefit the client.
Questions to ask Pet Parent:
-
Are there any health concerns, lumps, bumps, sensitive hips or knees?
-
Are there any skin issues or sensitivity?
-
Are there any Behavioral issues; reactive, timid, anxious etc.?
-
How old is the pet?
-
Does the pet have experienced being groom? If so, how was their experience.?
-
Are you interested in anal glands, teeth bushing, or nail grinding today?
-
What are you looking to get done today?
- If the client is getting groomed:
-
What is your ideal haircut?
-
What length would you like?
-
What style head do you prefer?
-
Would you like any length taken off the tail or ears? If so, how much and what style?
7-Point Pet Care Check
-
Eyes: As a sign of health, pet stylists look to see if a pet’s eye color is bright. If the eyes are dull in color or have a green or yellow discharge, there may be an underlying issue such as an allergy, infection or something more serious.
-
Ears: It’s natural for a pet to have an odor to its ears, but when the odor is strong, there may be an issue. Ears that are swollen or tender and have discharge are also red flags for pet groomers.
-
Nose: Pet stylists check for changes in texture and color. A prolonged dry, cracked nose, particularly with loss of pigmentation, scabs or open sores as well as contact sensitivity and nasal discharge can all be warning signs.
-
Mouth & Teeth: Decaying teeth and swollen gums could be signs of gum disease, while healthy teeth with puffy gums can signal a different health issue.
-
Paw Pads: Cracked pads typically result from irritants, diet or rough terrain and are not necessarily indicators of a more serious problem. However, based on the history of the pet, a pet groomer might recommend a visit to the veterinarian.
-
Skin & Coat: Pet groomers run their hands along the pet’s body to check for bumps, scrapes, lumps, hot spots, warts and matting. Any raised surface would be a sign that further inspection by a veterinarian may be necessary.
-
Underside: Odors, matting or insects on a pet’s underside are all concerning issues for a pet groomer. They will check for these symptoms as well as any red, swollen or irritated skin.
